If there is any justice in this world, the 2013 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film will go to "The Broken Circle Breakdown"
.[EDIT: I wrote that sentence in December 2012, and was a bit optimistic about how soon a movie gets released overseas. But the movie is now a nominee for the 2014 Oscars!]
Based on an incredible theatre play, the movie is the most wonderful combination of joyful romance and intense tragedy.
One of the movie's main highlights is the heartfelt bluegrass music that really sets the tone for, and enhances every scene. Bjorn Eriksson
wrote music and arranged traditionals and covers.
The two main actors (Johan Heldenbergh and Veerle Baetens) and a band of great musicians perform the key songs of the movie live on stage in a limited number of concerts.
I was lucky to get photo-access to the concert in "De Roma
", an iconic venue that is also featured in the movie as the concert hall where a pivotal scene takes place.
These are my impressions of that concert
. I can still feel my heart pounding.
