DPR Wed C&C: My images up for C&C

]]>This gallery contains a collection of copies (images isolated from different other galleries).
I have presented these images for honest C&C (Comments and Critique) in the Wednesday C&C Thread.
This is a weekly event in the Olympus SLR Talk Forum on Digital Photography Review (DPR).
Sometimes I look for feedback on content, style and expression for images that I believe are OK.
Sometimes I just want technical guidance to steer me through crazy experiments.

This weekly C&C exchange was started by Jonas B in April 2008. Hosting was taken over by Gautham.
After him, I have hosted this thread for more than half a year. Christa and Claus have taken over since then.
The sequence is chronological (not for shooting, but for C&C edition). The title is the one I picked quickly for the Thread.
In the caption, I will provide a link to the posting in the C&C Thread. The input from the other participants is generally in the subsequent replies.

]]>For this walk I limited myself photographically to UWA (ultra wide angle), taking only the ZD7-14mm lens on my Olympus E-5. The equivalent focal lengths in classic 35mm are 14 to 28 mm.
For some of the photos the aperture does not show, because I used the trick of pressing the lens release button, which disengages the contacts and turns the constant F4 lens into an effective F2.8.

]]>Photo report of a day visiting several museums in Brussels, after a train ride from Antwerp.
Our first stop was BOZAR, where we saw Polaroids (often severely out of focus) and intimate graphic arts by Cy Twombly, as well as large art pieces by Per Kirkeby.
At the Royal Fine Arts Museum, we took a walk through the collection, and visited the "Stanley Kubrick - Photographer" show. I was amazed by the quality of his narrative photo work.
Finally on to the "Present!" exhibition by graduates from the Brussels Academy, at two locations near St Catherine Square : "De Markten" and "Elektriciteitscentrale".
I shot with the LX3 only and have let the art inspire my post-processing, going for a few different looks in "polaroid" and panorama formats. The blur was defocused manually.

]]>Images from Centre Pompidou Metz (France), where we visited the "Bivouac" retrospective of interior designers Bouroullec and an extensive collection of the "Wall Drawings 1968-2007" by Sol LeWitt.
As always, I was mostly interested in the interaction of the viewers with the art. I travelled light on this occasion, so all images were made with Panasonic LX3 (handheld, no flash).
The very last photo of this series is made by photographer Philippe Cousin (the subject of images 33-38, who wanted to return the favour, with his Leica M9). I just cropped it a bit.

]]>Konik horses are a tough breed : they can live outdoors without man-made shelter in any season and eat what the land provides.
Together with Galloway bovines (and elsewhere: with sheep or goats), they are used to graze native forage and thus maintain a number of nature preserves.
I saw a few of them in "Hobokense Polder", a nature reserve (92ha) right next to the Schelde in Antwerp, locked between petro-industry and social housing.
One Konik allowed me to get really close while he was grazing in shallow water. It took just a bit of patience and a balancing act on the edge of the ruins of a bunker, to get some shots.
Here are the images from that walk, shot with ZD50-200mm, ZD12-60mm and even ZD8mmFE on my Olympus E-5.

]]>This gallery contains not a single shot that I made.
It is a place where I store images made by (internet forum) friends, that I have altered in some way to provide an alternative vision.
Most often this results from fiddling with composition, sometimes from other post-processing treatments.
The first image is always the original, followed by my version. I make no claim on copyright: that remains with the original photographer.
Most of this was done for the Wednesday C&C Thread in the Olympus SLR Talk Forum on Digital Photography Review (DPR).

]]>Some LX3 very-low-light impressions from a walk through the "Ruien" in Antwerp (Belgium). I used the small flash only a few times, in order to preserve the atmosphere.
The "Ruien" were a system of little brooks and rivers, connected by canals, that take their water to the river Schelde. They formed the borders of the old city and a line of defence. With the growth of the city, they functioned more and more as open sewers, taking waste to the "Vlieten" that were the original harbour docks of the city. Over time, the "Ruien" got covered with ever more bridges, construed hop-scotch next to each other to meet the inhabitants' building needs (and their desire to push the smell towards the neighbours). On these vaulted bridges of brick or hardstone, not only roads but also new houses and larger buildings were built. On average, the city is now two or three meters above its original ground level, reducing the first floors of the oldest houses to cellar level. This is where Europe's wealthiest merchants had their warehouses.
There is currently still 8 km of "Ruien" accessible for research and access to the newer sewers, of which 2 km is open for this very special walk through the vestiges of Antwerp's history. The tour starts with a small boat ride to give an impression of times past. But then we come to a landing and continue on foot, through water and muck, between rats and spiders, ancient locks and more "modern" sewage installations. The walk takes us under a succession of the bridges that are the city's foundation. Our guide tells us about the squares and churches that are directly above us and show us street drains and air chimneys that we recognize when back in open air.
This walk offers a totally different perspective on our city. It's like living archeology in our backyard, complete with smells and sounds. Fascinating!
