Our West Scotland adventures in 2015 left us hungering for more. In April 2017, we returned, this time to East Scotland, for a number of very stiff hikes in the Cairngorms and at the North Sea coast, as well as some urban escapes, and even some minor bird watching (gannets, puffins & guillemots).
Our itinerary out of Edinburgh included Kingussie as gateway to some of the Cairngorms' nicest peaks, then through the Speyside to Banff, Fraserburgh and surrounding small fishermen villages Pennan and Crovie, before heading down the east coast to Aberdeen via Stonehaven and Dunnottar Castle.
After a short detour back north for Peterhead and the Bullers of Buchan, we turned inland for more Cairngorms hiking around Ballater near Balmoral, and back to the coast for St Andrews, East Neuk and Anstruther, from where the Isle of May with its wealth of sea birds was a short boatride away.
Finally a day in Edinburgh, where a last batch of hills needed conquering. We have not yet seen the last of Scotland, nor vice versa.
