By coincidence, our SW-USA travels brought us to Furnace Creek, in Death Valley NP, on the day that the Badwater 2013 Ultramarathon was about to start.
So I got out of bed at 4:30 AM in order to catch the first of three starts, 17 miles from our hotel at the Badwater Basin (certainly the lowest place in the USA and probably one of the hottest).
When I got in the car around 5.00 AM, the outside temperature was already 100° F. This was well before sunrise.
I witnessed the 6:00 AM start of the first group of people who would run 135 miles in two or three days, in the blistering conditions of Death Valley and on to Mount Whitney.
